Heather Whitcraft for GCEA

Advocacy in Action

Campaign Hero

My Bio

I am running for GCEA Vice President and ESP Member at Large because I am deeply committed to advocating for the needs of all our educators, support staff, and students. As an active member of the GCEA and a passionate community advocate, I have always worked to support school staff, students, and families. I am also involved with Board of Education elections, where my work helps create informed voters; encouraging our community to understand the impact of local elections and to participate in shaping the future of our schools. Informed civic engagement matters because local decisions affect staffing, curriculum, budgets, and policies that directly impact students, their families, and educators every day.

In my roles as ESPAN Captain, SOGI Chair, and ESP Membership Chair, I have fought to ensure that your voices are heard and your rights are protected. As ESP Member at Large, I will work tirelessly to represent the interests of our educational support professionals, ensuring that our working conditions, pay, and benefits reflect the value we bring to our schools.

As Vice President, I will continue to amplify the concerns of our members at every level of decision-making, from the classroom to the boardroom. I believe in a GCEA that prioritizes unity, equity, and the well-being of all its members. My work on the ESP and Equity Committees has given me the tools to advocate for real change, and I am ready to bring that experience to the leadership table.

With over 20 years of leadership experience and about 15 years of advocacy within education, I know what it takes to fight for what’s right and make meaningful change. My early advocacy days were spent fighting against standardized testing in Gloucester Township at the dawn of PARCC’s tenure, where I worked alongside educators and families to resist high-stakes testing that undermined our students’ true potential.

I am running because our community deserves a leader who is dedicated to fairness, inclusivity, and support. Together, we can strengthen our association and ensure a brighter future for all of us.

My Key Issues

Advocating for All Educators, Support Staff, and Students

Strengthening support for all educational professionals, including teachers, support staff, and paraprofessionals. Advocating to ensure fair pay, benefits, and working conditions that reflect the critical role they play in student success.

Strengthening Unity and Collaboration within GCEA

Fostering unity and collective action within the GCEA. Ensuring that every member’s voice is heard and advocating for a collaborative, inclusive environment that supports both educators and support staff.

Prioritizing Equity and Well-Being for All Members

Advocating for policies that address equity across all aspects of education, from staffing to curriculum. Advocating to ensure that every member’s well-being (mental, physical, and professional) is prioritized in district decisions.

Commitment to Fairness, Inclusivity, and Support

Ensuring that all members (educators, support staff, and students) feel valued, respected, and supported within the GCEA. Promoting inclusivity in all areas of policy development and advocating for equitable treatment and opportunities for all members.

Enhancing Representation for Support Staff at Every Level

Strengthening the representation of support staff in leadership discussions. Amplifying their concerns in all levels of decision-making, from the classroom to the boardroom, advocating to ensure their needs are reflected in district policies.

Championing the Rights of Educational Support Professionals

Prioritizing the needs of Educational Support Professionals (ESPs) by advocating for improved working conditions, equitable pay, and better benefits. Advocating to ensure ESPs have a strong voice in district and association decision-making.

Promoting Informed Civic Engagement in Education

Encouraging active participation in Board of Education elections and other local governance opportunities. Providing resources and guidance for community members to understand the impact of their vote on local education policies, staffing, and budgets.

Bringing Real Change through Proven Advocacy Experience

Using the skills and experience gained from work on the ESP and Equity Committees to advocate for tangible, positive changes in the working conditions, rights, and policies impacting GCEA members and the broader educational community.

Pension Justice: Tier 1 for Everyone

Fighting for Pension Justice by advocating for Tier 1 benefits for all members, ensuring that every educator and support professional, regardless of their time in the system, receives the full pension benefits they deserve. Working to ensure a secure and fair retirement for all GCEA members.

Professional Development for ESPs

Advocating for continuous professional development opportunities tailored specifically for Educational Support Professionals (ESPs). This includes training in areas such as classroom management, special education strategies, and mental health support, to help ESPs grow in their roles and enhance their impact on student success.

Member-Centered Workshops and Offerings

Creating member-centered workshops and professional development offerings that are designed to meet the diverse needs of GCEA members. These workshops will cover topics like leadership, stress management, career advancement, and other key skills that empower members to thrive both personally and professionally.

Break in Service Bill for ESPs

Advocating for the Break in Service Bill to protect the rights of ESPs who experience breaks in service due to personal, family, or medical reasons. Ensuring that breaks in service do not negatively impact their seniority, benefits, or pension eligibility, allowing ESPs to take necessary leaves without penalty.

ESP Bill of Rights Advocacy

Championing the ESP Bill of Rights, a comprehensive set of protections for Educational Support Professionals, including job security, fair wages, safe working conditions, and access to professional development. This bill would affirm the essential role of ESPs in the educational system and guarantee their rights and protections under law.
